What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based therapy recommended by NICE for PTSD, trauma, and a wide range of distressing life experiences — and I’ll be honest, it’s an unusual one. You hold a difficult memory in mind whilst moving your eyes or tapping, and somehow, that’s enough to trigger your body’s own natural healing response. It sounds odd. But it works.

EMDR was originally developed to help war veterans process the kind of trauma that talking simply couldn’t reach. It’s now used across the world with people of all ages and backgrounds — children, adults, people who’ve tried everything else and quietly started to wonder whether anything ever would.

What I love about it is that it isn’t really a talking therapy. You don’t have to find the words for what happened, explain it, or relive it in detail. That makes it particularly well-suited to people who’ve tried talking and felt it wasn’t quite getting there — or who find the idea of opening up difficult.

My Approach

I’ve used EMDR to help people work through experiences that had left them feeling genuinely hopeless — certain they’d never feel better, never move on. Time and again, I’ve watched that shift. Something that felt permanently raw and overwhelming becomes, in their own words, manageable. Distant. Done.

I offer EMDR from a discreet, private therapy room in central Wilmslow, easily accessible from Alderley Edge, Handforth, Mobberley, and Knutsford. My approach is calm, steady, and contained — evidence-based, drawing on CBT, DBT, schema therapy, and trauma-informed practice. Sessions are structured, so you always know what to expect, and adapted to your pace, so you’re never pushed beyond what feels safe.

What EMDR Can Help With...

EMDR is effective for a wide range of difficulties, including:

•Childhood trauma and difficult early experiences

•Accidents, injuries, and medical trauma

•Bereavement and complicated grief

•Relationship trauma

•Workplace stress and burnout

•Anxiety, panic, and phobias

•Low self-worth

•Performance blocks — whether that’s horse riding, exams, sport, or presentations

Many of the people I work with have carried something difficult for years, sometimes decades. They’ve often tried other approaches before finding their way to EMDR. Clients regularly describe it as “freeing”, “behind me now”, or “like something finally clicked into place.”

Is EMDR The Right Fit For You?

EMDR may be the right fit for you if....

  • Feel stuck in old patterns and can’t quite work out why

  • Have memories that still feel raw, even years later

  • Experience anxiety, dread, or a sense of shutdown linked to past events

  • Want a structured, evidence-based approach rather than open-ended talking

  • Prefer a therapy that works with your brain’s natural healing system

If you’re not sure whether it’s right for you, we can explore that together in an initial consultation — no pressure, no commitment.

Why Do People Come for EMDR in Wilmslow?

Wilmslow and the surrounding Cheshire areas carry a particular kind of pressure — demanding workplaces, high academic expectations, busy family lives. Many of the people I see have been keeping things together on the outside whilst quietly struggling on the inside. EMDR offers something beyond managing symptoms. It gets to the root.

My therapy room is in central Wilmslow and it has easy access and nearby parking. I work with clients from across the area, including Alderley Edge, Handforth, Mobberley, Knutsford, and South Manchester.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

This varies depending on your history and what you’re hoping to address. Some people notice meaningful change within a handful of sessions; others benefit from longer work. We review progress regularly, so the process stays transparent and collaborative — and you’re never left wondering where things stand.
