THERAPIST FOR HORSE RIDERS | FACE TO FACE WILMSLOW
& ONLINE ACROSS THE UK

You’ve landed on this page because despite giving everything to your horse: access to the best trainers; groundwork; nutritionists; physios, farriers and veterinary care, you are still stuck in your own head, and it’s erasing the joy and excitement from your riding.

As riders, we tend to think about ourselves last. When did you last have a massage, go to physio, get your nails done or have some hydrotherapy? When did you last talk to someone about how you feel, how you really feel, about your riding?

The horse world is full of opinions. But if you’re stuck in your own head, what you need is someone who will listen.

I am a BABCP accredited psychotherapist and I work with riders at every level, from happy hackers to polo players, eventers and affiliated show jumpers, both face to face in Wilmslow, Cheshire and online across the UK

The Challenges Riders Face...

  • Trauma and loss of confidence after an accident — a fall, a bolt, a rear or a buck that has left you fearful and hesitant in the saddle

  • Not feeling worthy of your horse — you have a wonderful, talented horse but you don’t feel good enough for them. Not overhorsed, but feeling like you don’t deserve them

  • Overthinking before competitions — anticipatory anxiety that builds in the days and weeks before a show, leaving you exhausted before you even get there

  • Being in your head — losing your feel and instinct as a rider because your mind is too busy

  • The lasting impact of harsh criticism — a single comment from a trainer, judge or fellow rider can stay with you for years, quietly eroding your confidence and enjoyment of riding

  • Comparing yourself to others — watching other riders and feeling like you’ll never measure up

  • Comparing your new horse to your previous horse — grieving a past partnership and struggling to build a new one

  • Perfectionism — setting impossibly high standards for yourself and feeling crushed when you don’t meet them

  • Self criticism and shame — replaying mistakes, taking feedback too personally, or feeling like you’re letting your horse down

  • Problems of attention — forgetting courses, losing focus mid-round, or getting easily distracted

  • Grief after losing a horse — the loss of a horse is profound and often underestimated by those who don’t ride

“Whether you’re a happy hacker or competing at the highest level, I can help you get out of your head, reduce overthinking and discover your Calm and Competent Rider mode.”

How I Can Help...

Over many years working with riders, I’ve found that the most powerful combination of therapies for equestrian psychology is EMDR and Schema Coaching. I have developed this into a structured programme called The Calm and Competent Rider Programme, which guides riders from assessment through to fully embodying a calm, confident and competent version of themselves in the saddle.

The feedback I consistently receive is that when riders are able to tap into their Calm and Competent Rider mode, they notice marked improvements in their performance.

I also draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to tackle overthinking, competition anxiety and negative thought patterns, and Compassion Focused Therapy to address shame, self-criticism and the harsh inner voice many riders know all too well.

Just like horses, every rider is an individual. I tailor my approach to what will work best for you.

What Your Treatment Will Look Like..

  • You will have a safe space to explore how your past experiences, in and out of the saddle, have shaped how you feel about yourself as a rider

  • You will understand how your body responds to pressure, anxiety and fear

  • Memories that are holding you back will be processed so they no longer feel as raw or overwhelming

  • You will develop practical techniques to manage competition nerves, overthinking and self-doubt

  • We will work on building a genuinely positive, compassionate mindset, not just positive thinking, but a real shift in how you see yourself

  • You will feel more present, more connected to your horse and more able to enjoy your riding

  • You will leave with your own personal Calm and Competent Rider mode, a resource that belongs to you for life

Online Therapy for Horse Riders Across UK

You don’t need to be in Cheshire to work with me. I offer online therapy to riders anywhere in the UK, and many of my equestrian clients find online sessions fit perfectly around busy yard and competition schedules.

Whether you’re in Scotland, Yorkshire, Devon or anywhere in between, if you’re a rider who needs support, I can help.

What Riders Say...

“I came to Geraldine after a serious fall that left me injured and I’d started to feel sick and stressed when I rode, I wasn’t enjoying it.  I felt like my whole identity had been taken away. The therapy was really helpful. I not only got back in the saddle but began competing again. I finally feel like the old me but more confident and stronger.”

About Geraldine

Growing up in the Lake District, I begged, borrowed and stole rides wherever I could. I would visit the local trekking centre and ride their fell ponies and bomb around on friends’ horses when the chance arose. As soon as I started working after university, I wasn’t interested in travelling the world. I wanted to find a riding school that could help me further develop my own riding techniques and understand the different disciplines.

I was lucky enough to loan horses, then own, and spending time around busy yards gave me a unique insight into the pressures riders face. Because of my clinical background in trauma and emotional regulation, I began to notice something that others perhaps missed — how negatively this was impacting riders at every level. Nobody was talking about the rider’s mental health. And I knew I could help.

To find out more about my clinical background and qualifications, visit my About page.

I’ve had my own knocks along the way too. Broken fingers, strained muscles and even a fractured pelvis, so I know exactly how it feels to be in, and thrown out of, the saddle. I currently own a cob youngster that I am producing which is keeping me busy and I hope one day they’ll become a therapy pony.

Get a Stronger Mindset

Whether you’re struggling to get back in the saddle after a fall, drowning in self-doubt before a competition, or simply not enjoying your riding the way you used to, I would love to help.
